History

Since its creation in 1457 Pitcaple castle has had a turbulent history. It has played host to Royalty, acted as both a Royalist and Covenant Prison and been besieged and burned by enemy forces.

Pitcaple castle stands on ground given by James II to David Leslie, the first baron of Pitcaple. It stayed in the Leslie family until 1757 when the last of the Leslies, Brigadier General Sir James Leslie died. The castle then passed onto James' daughter who was married to Professor John Lumsden. It continued to be passed down the Lumsden family until Margeret, on her marriage to Captain Patrick Burges, obtained permission to change the family name to Burges-Lumsden. This retained the association between her name and  Pitcaple castle that had started over 200 years earlier.
